BER Directory was developed by Caragh Software in 2006 by Michael Moran and Trevor Osborne, Two like minded people with a keen interest in architectural design using renewable resources and alternative energies.
We saw a market for an online directory of service providers, Companies that could advertise their products towards people that would like to reduce their energy bills and ultimately play their part in reducing emissions and dependency on energy and fuel providers.

Trevor Osborne - Lead Programmer for Caragh Software and Technical Director for BER Directory,
Trained as a design draughtsman in the petrochemical industry and later moved to CAD (Computer Aided Design) in the pharmaceutical and semi-conductor industries. The early days of using CAD required a knowledge of computer programming principles and so Trevor trained in the fields of IT, IS  and computer programming languages. Today he has 34 years work experience in design, engineering, software development, IT and IS . 

BER Directory does NOT publish a paper based directory and send it to homes and business's only to find it adding to landfill sites at a later date. The fact that you are reading this shows that many households and business's now use the web to find local services, This helps us to minimise our overheads and can pass the savings onto advertisers by offering cheaper online advertising rates. 


Our programmers have developed a simple and intuitive online form using industry standard naming conventions, if you are using the "Google" toolbar many of the boxes on the form will be filled in for you using the "Autofill" button. Online database of ‘Building Energy Rating’ service providers. A directory of BER Assessors, BER product suppliers, BER product installers and BER related products – A ‘one-stop shop’ for all things BER related.

The recent European Union directive EPDB (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) calls for dwellings and business premises to adhere to energy efficient guidelines and hold a certificate showing the buildings energy rating (BER) and CO2 emissions.

The web site is the first Independent BER Directory solely dedicated to providing the consumer with a comprehensive list of BER Assessors, Renewable Energy Source suppliers, installers, BER news, FAQs, Energy saving tips
The site caters for the Trade by allowing individual SEI registered BER Assessors to sign up and advertise their service by areas covered.

The home page.
Contains components that display at random each time the home page is accessed or refreshed. This gives the user something new to read at each visit and hopefully encourage many return visits:-

The ‘Upcoming Events’ component - Is date sensitive and only shows future events in the next two months, this keeps the site fresh by not showing past events.
News component - We invite users to submit articles via our ‘News desk’ sending an email for review by our editor before adding the article to the database
Recent advertiser details are shown on the home page - This encourages advertisers to subscribe by showing their advertisement on the home page immediately after registration
Monthly newsletter subscription - Users can enter their email addresses to receive monthly news articles, energy saving tips, upcoming events via email in PDF format. Email addresses are secured on our database and not sold on to third parties

The Toolbar.
Assessors, Suppliers, Installers and Products Drop-Down lists – These lists provide a quick link to service providers by selecting from the alphabetized areas or categories. Areas and categories are drawn from the database therefore only relevant areas/categories are displayed in the lists preventing empty results.
A-Z company index - This lists all companies on our database alphabetically in groups of three letters ie. ABC / DEF etc., using ‘intelligent tabs’ that only display companies that are registered, this prevents tabs being displayed that have null content.
About BER (FAQs) – Links to a page of 40 frequently Asked Questions about BER. Clicking on one of the questions displays the answer in the top portion of the page, saving the user scrolling down the list to see the response

Assessors - BER assessors are listed under location they cover for carrying out BER assessments on New dwelling, Existing dwelling, Residential and Commercial.
Suppliers - Suppliers of energy efficient and renewable products to be advertised under relevant category listing.
Installers - For listing of installer of energy efficient products
Products - Companies can list products related to energy efficiency and renewable energies sectors to advertise and avail of the online shopping cart facility with secure transactions.

We protect our advertisers from email spammers.
One of the drawbacks of many websites is exposing email addresses that ‘spammers’ can collect – BERdirectory.ie gets around this problem by storing email addresses on the web server in a database table and uses an ASP page to contact the advertiser without exposing their email address
